I grew up in Altavista, Virginia. A small town of 3,000 people. My mom was an elementary school teacher who also taught art class. My dad worked at the local bank, but was mostly a father, coach, and craftsman in his own right. He designed and helped build the house I grew up in, and they still live in today. My parents' hand-on approach to things wore off on me. I’ve always been into art and sports.
After a degree in marketing and graphic design from Virginia Tech, I eventually found myself in Charlotte, NC working for an architecture agency for seven years. Being a graphic designer among architects was a early window into the advertising agency world.
My real foot into advertising came when I decided to attend the VCU Adcenter back in my home state of Virginia. Now known as the VCU Brandcenter, these two years were the best career decision I’ve ever made. I worked at Work Labs (Cabell basically adopted me) and the Martin Agency, while finishing my studies.
That landed me in Portland, Oregon at Wieden+Kennedy. That was in 2005. I’ve been doing art and sports ever since.
